Prayer for the Madman

sing a song for the madman
he's forgotten the night
when she lay there beside him
with his faith burning bright
she's his Whore of the moonlight
and he's drowning St John
but for five hundred dollars
she will sing any song

and he takes her so softly
and his kindness, behold
he kisses her slyly
as her lips reek of gold
he's forgotten it's midnight
she's forgotten her trade
as they reel through the touches
that their parents forbade

and they both can't remember
how it got underway
they were burnt in a cyclone
and whipped in the fray
well, he stood on the outside
and she dragged him within
and he begged her for knowledge
as she taught him to sin

and tho' there's no love lost
no feeling or pride
she welcomes him in
to her refuge inside
his mem'ries are empty
and her pockets are full
but it don't really matter
'cos to him she's a jewel

and she'll buy some new earings
with the money she's made
and he'll find some new fiction
for the way he got laid
and tho' he's not practiced
she is pinned to the wall
like a moth he collected
in the deep, darkened hall

well he beats her so harshly
for the love he can't share
and she blows on his fingers
for the fire that's there
and tho he's not with her
he's not far away
and she still can't remember
how she came from the clay

but he fashions her elbow
and he leans on her hip
and they revel the lies
that come
forth from their lips
and they don't know the meaning
and they don't really care
for what matters is pleasure
tho' it's not really there

and he heats up the iron
and he brands her for life
and he mentions it quickly
that she might be his wife
but she couldn't have heard him
for she's nodding her head
like some faint - hearted schoolgirl
who is new to the bed

and in the morning she leaves him
and he's losing his grip
as she goes to another
for the same kind of trip
and he values her friendship
and she values his gall
and they'll both climb forever
and continue to fall

sing a song for the madman
he's forgottten the light
that she showed him so briefly
in the whispering night
he's a pimp in the playground
she's a lady as sure
as the reasons he left her
and broke free from her pure
